18+ The legal gambling age in Spain is 18. Gambling costs money and carries a risk of harm.
Responsible gambling in Spain
Spain splits gambling regulation by channel rather than by product: the state regulates online, the seventeen autonomous communities regulate the venues you can walk into. That split runs through the self-exclusion scheme too, and it is the thing to get right.
At a glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulator | DGOJ — Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego |
| What it licenses | Online gambling at state level: casino games, slots, poker, betting and contests. Bingo halls, arcades and land-based casinos belong to the autonomous communities, and state lotteries are reserved to SELAE and ONCE. |
| Licence register | Operadores con licencia A licence obtained in another state has no effect in Spain, and the DGOJ says so in those words. |
| Domain rule | The DGOJ tells players to check for a .es domain, because that is what a licensed operator is required to use. |
| Self-exclusion scheme | RGIAJ — autoprohibición |
| How to register | In person at any registry listed in article 16.4 of Ley 39/2015, online through the DGOJ electronic office with a digital certificate, or through the "DNIe autoprohibidos" app — Android only, and it needs a DNIe 3.0 card and NFC. |
| Minimum term | Indefinite; cancellation can be requested only six months after entry |
| How it ends | On request, no earlier than six months in. |
| What it blocks | State-level online gambling, plus reserved land-based games at the point a prize is paid. Entries are passed to the autonomous communities for their own registers. |
| Worth knowing | A registration made directly with a regional register works only in that region unless it has an interconnection agreement with the DGOJ. Register with the DGOJ for the widest cover. |
| Minimum age | 18 |
| Complaints about an operator | DGOJ — denuncias y reclamaciones After the operator has answered, or after one month of silence. A written submission is required. |
Who regulates the market
The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego — the DGOJ — is the state regulator, working under Ley 13/2011. It licenses online gambling at state level: casino games, slots, poker, sports betting and contests. State lotteries are reserved by law to SELAE and ONCE.
What it does not cover is anything physical. Bingo halls, arcades and land-based casinos are regulated by each autonomous community and, in the DGOJ’s own words, fall outside its competence.
The legal online market has a precise birthday: on 6 June 2012, with the first online gambling authorisations granted, Spain’s legal online market began operating.
One line from the DGOJ is worth carrying into any conversation about operator marketing: authorisations obtained in other states are not valid in Spain. A Malta or Curaçao licence tells you an operator is supervised somewhere. It has no effect here.
How to check whether a site is licensed here
The DGOJ publishes a four-step check for players, and the third step is the
quick one: if you are playing online, verify that a .es domain is used,
because that is what licensed operators are required to use.
The other three: identify the company actually behind the offer, confirm it in the DGOJ’s updated list of licensed operators, and look for the “juego autorizado” mark. Search the register by website rather than by brand name.
How self-exclusion works here
The Spanish scheme is the Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego — the RGIAJ — known in Spain as autoprohibición.
It blocks online gambling, and, where the rules require it, reserved land-based games such as lotteries at the point a prize is paid. Registrations are passed on to the autonomous communities for entry in their own prohibition registers.
There are three ways in. In person, using the RGIAJ form, at any of the registries listed in article 16.4 of Ley 39/2015 — which includes public administration electronic registries, post offices, Spanish embassies and consulates, registry assistance offices, and also the admission desks of gambling establishments and National Police stations. Online, through the DGOJ’s electronic office, which needs a digital certificate. Or through the mobile app “DNIe autoprohibidos”, which is currently Android only and requires a DNIe 3.0 card and NFC on the handset.
The duration works the opposite way round from most of our other markets. The registration is indefinite by default; what is time-limited is your ability to undo it. Cancellation can be requested only once six months have passed since it was entered. You can pull a certificate of your own RGIAJ status through the electronic office, issued instantly if you hold a digital certificate.
The regional caveat is the part people get caught by. Unless an autonomous community has an interconnection agreement with the DGOJ, a registration made directly with a regional register takes effect only inside that region. Where an automated interconnection exists, entries replicate in both directions. If you want the broadest coverage in one action, register with the DGOJ.
Where to get help
FEJAR, the federation of rehabilitated gamblers’ associations, runs the free helpline on 900 200 225, with support in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician and English, plus a self-assessment and a section on self-prohibition. It is the main non-governmental resource.
The DGOJ’s own Juego seguro hub carries the regulator’s player-protection material, and it publishes a directory of institutions to contact about a gambling problem — the route to a service near you.
One address that circulates widely in affiliate content and in some operator
terms: jugarbien.es. It no longer resolves at all — there is no DNS record for
it against either 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1. Do not use it, and treat any page still
listing it as out of date.

Self-assessment: FEJAR self-assessment . A result is not a diagnosis.
What the register cannot reach
RGIAJ binds operators holding a Spanish licence. An operator without one is not connected to the register, does not query it, and has no obligation to.
Spain gives that gap a price tag, which is unusual and worth knowing. Advertising, sponsoring or promoting illegal gambling in any form can be a serious infringement carrying a fine of up to €1 million, and offering unlicensed gambling in Spain is a very serious infringement with fines up to €50 million, disqualification for up to four years, and interim measures including site and payment blocking. The rules also bar sending any commercial communication to a person registered in the RGIAJ.
None of which helps you at the moment an unlicensed site accepts your registration. If you are in the RGIAJ and a site still lets you play, the register is not the tool for it: a device-level blocker is, because it works regardless of who is licensed.
For a dispute with a licensed operator, the sequence is fixed: complain to customer service first and ask which contractual clause the decision rests on; if you disagree with the answer, or get none within one month, file a complaint against the operator with the DGOJ in writing.

- Gamban — Paid blocking software, same principle.
